Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel ran across the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation took place on the third circuit when safety workers were seen on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his compromised front wing
Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two guys dashing across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track track officials can be permitted to just run across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is currently investigating the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was advised that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the governing body
"On lap three, safety personnel were informed and placed on standby to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were withdrawn and a caution signal was displayed in that section"
"We are still investigating what happened following that moment"
