Steam Next Fest is now live, and players have encountered a variety of interesting creations from small studios. Yet, one stands out for its quirky concept. Called Unko Technica, this old-school styled platformer includes a protagonist that is literally a turd striving to travel to a toilet. As a fun fact, "Unko" means "poop."
Player controls is straightforward: you only need a jump control. Throughout 150 challenges, you'll face mini-bosses and access a market to purchase skins for your poop character.
Plan your actions with caution, since one mistake requires beginning again. Leap off bubbles to propel yourself higher, navigate disappearing surfaces, and interact with triggers to unlock hidden paths. Gather currency and use them on tougher game content as gameplay intensifies.
In terms of design, the demo features neon environments and catchy background music. Its minimalist visual style of shifting geometric shapes evokes memories of fans of old favorites like Earthbound.
While it's tough to recall other games where you play as a dung character, video games have long included toilet humor. As an illustration, in Death Stranding, you can craft explosives from protagonist droppings. Titles such as Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved utilize manure as soil enrichment. Naturally, this theme appears heavily in Obsidian's role-playing game The Stick of Truth.
Regardless of its humorous concept, Unko Technica has already received notable accolades, like taking top honors at a major publisher's game competition in 2023. The demo is available currently on Steam, with the complete version planned to arrive on computers in the fall.
